As temperatures remain in the mid to high 30's throughout the Central Okanagan, the drain on the region's electrical system also increases.

With no end in sight to the current hot spell, FortisBC reminds consumers the high temperatures can have an impact on the company's electrical system.

Fortis says its system can overheat, much like a car, when exposed to these types of temperatures.

While Fortis is not anticipating any system interruptions due to the high temperatures, the company is encouraging consumers to conserve energy whenever possible.

These conservation measures include:
  • Use only essential appliances during the day. For example, program your dishwasher to run overnight.
  • Set your air conditioner a few degrees higher and only cool the rooms you are using. If you can, use fans instead of air conditioners.
  • Keep your blinds or curtains closed so the sun doesn't heat your home and force your air conditioner to work harder.
  • Reduce the use of heat producing appliances. For example, use a microwave instead of a regular oven and hang dry clothes rather than use a dryer.

A number of other energy saving tips are available at www.fortisbc.com.
